Las Vegas Is Having a Major Syphilis Outbreak Right Now

If you play your cards right (๐Ÿ˜‰), what happens in Vegas can actually stay in Vegas. But if you aren't careful, and indulge in too many of Vegas's many pleasures, and maybe don't wear a condom in doing so, what happens in Vegas is syphilis and it absolutely follows you home.

According to the Associated Press, there's a syphilis outbreak in Las Vegas that's so diabolical, it's earned Nevada the reputation of having the highest syphilis rate in the Western United States. The rate in Nevada is now fully double the national average of 6.3, at an astonishing 12.8 per 100,000 people.

Health officials say there's been a 128 percent increase in reported syphilis in Clark County cases since 2012, with 694 cases diagnosed in 2015. Men make up the majority of those diagnoses, accounting for 615 of the 694 cases.

The health officials referred to this increase as an "outbreak," and say they consider the diagnoses to be coming from "early syphilis cases," or syphilis that's been contracted within the past 12 months.
"We are considering this an outbreak because disease rates in our community are continuing to climb and we see no plateau at this point," said Joe Iser, chief health officer of the Southern Nevada district.

"Syphilis is easy to get but it is easy to get rid of with treatment. Many people don't realize the long-term consequences of untreated syphilis."

In case you were wondering, some of those long-term consequences include things like brain damage, mental deterioration, loss of balance and vision, and heart disease. So if you're going to Vegas anytime soon, definitely wear a condom! Maybe even two condoms. Can't be too careful.
