Hausa and Yoruba traders on Thursday afternoon, were involved in a
bloody altercation in the popular Mile 12 market in Lagos State.
Not less than 3 people were reported dead from the clash, which
purportedly began when an Hausa commercial bike rider drove against
traffic and hit a Yoruba bike rider.
However, another report infers that the clash started on Tuesday when a Hausa commercial bike rider knocked down a woman.
The bike rider was reportedly told to take the woman to the hospital,
but he blatantly refused insisting that the motorbike association
should cater to the woman’s hospital needs. This was said to have resulted into a fight which continued all
through Wednesday till Thursday when some Yoruba hoodlums invaded the
market and started attacking the Hausas.
During the attack, they were said to have burnt seven cars and killed three Hausa traders.
Meanwhile, Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode has ordered the
immediate closure of the market and restriction of movement in the area.
The Governor has also directed security operatives to deal with
anyone that goes against the directive of the state government by
obstructing law and order.About 50 suspects have been arrested from the scene of the incident
while soldiers’ presence has restored relative calm to the area.
