Chris Rock guilts Oscars crowd to buy daughters' Girl Scout cookies...and hungry stars waste no time tucking in

Chris Rock wasn't going to let his daughters be beaten in the Girl Scout cookie-selling stakes again this year.
The host asked the star-studded crowd at the 88th Academy Awards on Sunday to dig deep in their pockets to help his girls Lola and Zahra offload the most boxes of treats.

The hungry guests at the Dolby Theatre didn't need too much persuading and amazingly Rock revealed later on that Hollywood's hottest helped raise $65,243 for the good cause.Christian Bale, Matt Damon, Charlize Theron and Kate Winslet were just some of the stars spotted snacking on the treats.

Rock, 51, did however use some guilt-tripping tactics to help convince the celebs to help his daughters out, explaining that the Oscars gig meant him spending a lot of time away from home.'I’ve been away from my two daughters at a very important time in their life,' he said, adding, 'I have missed most of Girl Scout cookie season,

'Last night Zahra, my youngest called me up and said, "Daddy how come we never sell the most cookies? How come Mrs. Dunn wins every year?"'

Let's have a look: Kate Winslet and husband Ned Rocknroll appeared to be checking out the ingredients on their box of Tagalongs

'It would mean so much to my little girl if we could beat Linda Dunn.' he said.
'I want you to reach into your millionaire pockets and buy some of my daughters' Girl Scout cookies,' he announced as a photo of his girls flashed up behind him.'Alright, Tina Fey, get that money, girl. Charlize Theron, yes. Matt Damon, yes. Leo, you made $30 million—come on!'

Kate Winslet was pictured eyeing up a box Tagalongs while Mindy Kaling took to Twitter so show off her box of Samoas.Even after the live broadcast, the girls reportedly came back during commercial breaks to hawk more treats to hungry celebs.

They quickly found customers in Steven Spielberg and Benicio del Toro. Bale picked up a box of Thin Mints after asking his wife to loan him the cash.Superman star Henry Cavil ripped into his box of Thin Mints as soon as he got his hands on it.

Rock later took to Instagram to reveal that Joe Biden - who spoke on stage during the night - gave him $20 for the Girl Scouts.'$20 from the Vice President' the funny man can be heard saying in a clip after Biden handed him the cash as he walked by.

As Rock revealed the massive amount of money raised he joked Suge Knight had bought most of the boxes, just as cameras panned to actor R. Marcos Taylor (Straight Outta Compton) portraying the incarcerated record producer.

Opinion: Buhari’s futile quest for oil in the North and the promise of diversification

The Nigerian government led by President Muhammadu Buhari allocated a whopping sum of 39.4 billion naira (almost $200 million) for oil exploration in the Lake Chad basin in the proposed 2016 budget. While presenting the budget before the National Assembly last December, the president assured Nigerians that the 2016 budget is unlike any other before it.

“This budget represents a major step in delivering a new opportunity for Nigeria,” President Buhari said. “It demonstrates our confident optimism that despite challenging times, we have the will, resourcefulness and commitment to deliver prosperity to our people.”

At a time when the price of crude oil tethers ominously below the $30 per barrel mark in the global market, striking the black gold in a conflict-ridden region is hardly a sustainable way to deliver ‘a new opportunity for Nigeria.’ Although the proposed budget is currently being reviewed after the uncovering of unlawful padding of expenditures by civil servants, the fact the almost $200 million was initially earmarked to prospect for crude oil within the Lake Chad basin reveals the unpreparedness of the Nigerian government for transitioning the country into a post-fossil society.

The recent shuttle by the Nigerian leader between the capitals of major OPEC member states in the Middle East to boost the price of crude oil betrays the government’s lip service to diversifying our country’s ailing economy. In the last six months, the President Buhari has made repeated attempts to convince Iran, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Qatar to reduce oil production with the end goal of boosting prices. His effort so far is yet to yield positive results.

What is more, the Lake Chad basin is right in the middle of an ongoing insurgency by the Islamic terrorist group, Boko Haram. The northeast quadrant of the country where the oil exploration is expected to take place has seen over 2 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) since the height of the conflict in 2014.

In a region renowned for being the least developed of all the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria, finding oil is unlikely to transform the livelihoods of people—more or less the Northeast will be affected in the same manner which the resource-rich Niger Delta had been neglected by successive governments for half a century since the discovery of oil in commercial quantities in Oloibiri, a small village located in present-day Bayelsa State.

Furthermore, the Lake Chad basin is an important ecological zone, the site of one of Nigeria’s seven national parks. The Chingurmi-Duguma sector of the Lake Chad National Park (LCNP) contains floodplain wetlands, a habitat that attracts water birds and other Sahelian wildlife.

The planned exploration and possible discovery of oil in such an ecologically significant area might result in a dangerous game-changer in terms of loss of biodiversity especially native species.
The oil pollution in the Niger Delta is by far the largest environment damage to a river system in Africa and it is a constant reminder of government’s lack of political will in fostering a sustainable energy production in Africa’s largest economy.

Although the insurgency has created an atmosphere of uncertainty in the Lake Chad basin, renewable energy offers a route to reconstruction and the eventual resettlement of the IDPs of Nigeria’s northeast region. As a natural floodplain, the Lake Chad basin can be transformed into a commercial fishing zone with processing capacity for local consumption as well as foreign export.

To achieve this, the government should deploy the $200 million originally intended for oil prospecting to build wind farms that will supply the both artisanal and commercial fishing entities with clean energy for their operations.

The excess supply can be deployed for rural electrification. The spin-off of such investment will boost the quality of life in the area which in turn will discourage jobless youths from turning to terrorism.
If the $200 million is used to install wind turbines at $50,000 per unit, over 4,000 houses and cottage industries will benefit from improved power supply. The direct jobs that will be created could number as high as 100, 000. And this is a more willing, resourceful and committed way of delivering prosperity to people.

Opinion: Dear Yusuf Buhari, what has your father done for us?

Dear Yusuf Buhari,

Let me go straight to the point.

On the morning of Friday, May 29, 2015, I was very low on cash. I had to ring my boss at the newspaper I work for to help me out with some money to fuel my generator so I can fully concentrate and cover the event of that day.Nigeria was swearing in a new president… your father, Muhammadu Buhari. It was a day that brought hope to the lives of any, excluding myself and many others. Many had the hope that he would bring CHANGE to their living condition. They were not wrong; a lot has CHANGED since May 29, 2015.

In any case, Monday, February 29, 2016 would make it 9 months since Muhammadu Buhari became President. 9 months in human terms is the normal gestation period, so it is not out of place to ask of the result of your dad’s stay in Aso Rock, because I honestly have not seen any worth mentioning. Maybe I did not put that properly. I have not seen any POSITIVE result of your father’s 9 month-stay as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

See Yusuf, people are always asking me why I am always critical of your father. The answer is simple: Your father, Muhammadu Buhari carried out a coup on the night of my parents’ wedding! Why in the world would I not be interested in the activities of a man that made them leave the bliss they were to enjoy that night and put on the radio (I was not there but I’m sure that must have been my late father’s reaction, considering the fact that he loved being in the know always)

In order not to sound biased or prejudiced about Buhari, I would like to list a few of the major “highpoints” of his administration so far.

NATIONAL ASSEMBLY AND PARTY SUPREMACY HIGI-HAGA
Shortly after the election, both chambers of the National Assembly resumed plenary with their first agenda being the election of leaders of both the Senate and the House of Representatives. Naturally, the election of the officers should be done without rancour, considering the fact that most of the legislators were not new to the system and had gone through the process in time past. Since the end of the Olusegun Obasanjo era, election into National Assembly offices had largely gone without squabbles, which is something that can be termed good for our democracy.

Then comes your father and the APC warlords, spoiling for the entrenchment of “party supremacy,” a term that was hitherto alien to my somewhat rich repertoire of political jargons. But Bukola Saraki was having none of that. We all know how that episode panned out and how he connived with the PDP legislators and emerged as Senate President.

We must all not forget the role your father played in indirectly making Saraki’s ambition a reality. I’ve been wanting to ask what he had in mind when he called the anti-Saraki Senators for that meeting at a time when plenary was supposed to be in session. Please help me ask him, please.

To add insult to injury, Yakubu Dogara did a similar performance in the House of Representatives, although from the looks of things, he retraced his steps quickly by handing Jagaban’s man (or boy), Femi Gbajabiamila the House Leadership, unlike Saraki. At least the House of Representatives members were honourable enough to degenerate into fisticuffs, unlike the Senators who refused to give us a dose of some home-made WWE action.

ANTI-CORRUPTION: THE RESURRECTION OF THE ASSET AND THE GATE, BEYOND THE EYEGLASS, PDP AND THE CASPER RECOVERY
Before the election, Muhammadu Buhari promised to destroy corruption and many people started applauding him. As a good history student, I was not swayed by that assertion and so far, I have not been proven wrong given his escapades in the movie, Buhari vs. Corruption 1.0.

Is it Alex Ekwueme, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti or the famous Umaru Dikko Saga? (Oh Ye Nigerian youth, read up that Umaru Dikko bit, it’s nothing short of legendary!) Buhari’s style of FIGHTING corruption is “CIA-style.” The man does not play! But… but… but the sincerity of this FIGHT is something that is yet to be proven overtime because it is currently panning out the same way it did in 1984. The masses always suffer severe economic turmoil.

Long gist, let me talk about Buhari vs Corruption 2.0.

As part of the fallout of the Senate Presidency tussle, the Federal Government suddenly woke up and slammed a 13-count chare on Saraki, accusing him of false asset declaration. I reeled with laughter when I saw the headline. What I could not understand is how the Federal Government expected Nigerians not to see that issue as a case of witch hunting, even if it’s not, or is… Whatever the case may be the matter is still in court.

A 2003 issue was resurrected in 2015! I’m beginning to believe the bible verse that talks about the sins of the father visiting the children, even up to the 4th generation. Some schools of thought also find it useful to note that Saraki’s father, Olusola, was the Senate Leader when the probe of the petroleum ministry Buhari headed was on going. That was the one Fela talked about when he said “$2.8 billion, oil money is still missing.” We might as well watch out for Buhari vs Corruption 3.0!

We also had the Sambo Dasuki and his gate is flying round in the media. When Dasuki was first arrested, the DSS searched his premises and that of his father in Sokoto. Then we heard that he was accused of ILLEGAL POSSESSION OF FIREARMS – You know Hitler said the masses have short term memory so I’m not surprised that people do not remember this.

Next, we started hearing $2.1 billion (please write that amount somewhere, please). And from there we know the rest of the alleged sharing of the arms fund that happened, right? Some people say the Dasuki matter is as a result of bad blood between both men right from the time Babangida ended Buhari’s military government.

I also heard tales of Dasuki and Buhari’s wife, but that is not my business.
We also had the case of those two women that were given two of the most powerful ministries – Petroleum (Mind you Buhari is the current Minister of Petroleum, again) and Finance. Both women wear eyeglass and have eyes!

The case of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala can be summarised thus: A report emerges in the media of her complicity in one scam or the other and she issues a prompt reply. She has gotten a number of international jobs at the same time. Let’s move on to the oil woman, Diezani Alison-Madueke.You remember that Dasuki amount I told you to write down? Add 13 billion pounds to that list – that is the amount of money she was accused of laundering.

Her case has died down for now. Maybe it will be resurrected later, Saraki-style. Convert both amounts to its naira equivalent and convince me why Buhari is interested in Dasuki’s paltry $2.1 billion when we have a potential gold mine in the Alison-Madueke story.

Then the arrests started rolling in, all but one were either former officials in the past administration or members of the PDP. People started screaming blue murder and understandably too. Do Buhari and the EFCC mean that no APC chieftain has engaged in any act of corruption? No need to mention names. We all know the number of PDP people that have been arrested so far.

Then from the blues, the issue of Jafaru Isa sprung up. Within a space of 48 hours, he was arrested, interrogated, allegedly confessed to being in possession of N170 million of the Dasuki money and returned N100 million and he was released, all in less than 48 hours. That is some unbelievable sequence of events with results achieved with supersonic speed and alacrity. Well it was also reported that Mr. Isa was properly compensated with a N300 million contract for his sacrificial role. But, what do I know?

GULLIVER, REMITA, THE GATE AGAIN, MORE ASSETS, WILLI WILLI BUDGET AND THE BUTTON
While Buhari might still be applauded in some quarters for his anti-corruption antics, I would like to point out some things that have been giving me the notion that the President should walk to the EFCC headquarters in Abuja for questioning, at least he can do so when next he visits the country.

Talking about visiting the country, Yusuf, do you agree with me that your father is on a flying spree? Men that man is looking like he has a particular record he is trying to smash. Have you taken time to check out how much a single of those trips cost? Does he know that many of these trips do not have to be done by the President himself? Let’s keep that aside because if you ask me, that is corruption.

The REMITA issue is not a funny one either. While some people were busy hailing Buhari for insisting on implementing the Treasury Single Account (TSA), the Senate raised the alarm of big money hanky-panky going on in the implementation of the scheme. By big money I mean N25 billion (I also read N60 billion) DAILY!!!

Yusuf, please help me tell your father to address this issue. The amount is capable of causing a cardiac arrest. I recently read that the senate has already announced that the REMITA contract would be scrapped. Can this episode be termed a corruption case? If yes, why hasn’t it been treated as such? Let us keep that somewhere in our memory while we move on to other matters.

Let us go back to the gate. There is the story of President Buhari being a beneficiary to the party at the gate. Although we heard the President said he only received 2 bullet-proof cars as after he was allegedly attacked by suspected Boko Haram insurgents, there’s the curious case of his personal assistant,  Sabi’u Yusuf receiving the sum of about N850 million into an Access bank account with account number 0045586381 (anyone who does intenet banking can confirm the account number). Over to the anti-corruption agencies, if only they will take a break from their “Ramboism” and read this useless letter.

Yusuf, do you remember that time your father was campaigning? Do you remember the APC manifesto? Do you remember that your father promised to declare his assets? I remember he did, but in the end, did he? I woke up one morning to see a list of belongings which was ludicrously labelled an asset declaration. Houses and other assets were mentioned without their monetary equivalents.

Buhari’s house in Abuja might as well be worth more than a billion naira, who knows? Many funny items were mentioned in that list, sorry declaration, but the funniest has got to be the parcel of land in Rivers State which the president says he cannot locate.

Bloody Obadiah! How does he expect us to trust him when he does not know where his property is? After we overlooked his certificate brouhaha? What if that parcel of land is one of the juiciest in the whole of the South? What if the land in question has oil underneath? Many questions unanswered, but our president has declared his assets and we are supposed to hail him for his TRANSPARENCY and join in condemning Saraki for his FALSE ASSET DECLARATION.

Let’s talk about the 2016 budget a little. Yusuf, have you gone through the budget that your father submitted to the Senate? Have you seen the figures? I will just reel out a few so that I don’t sound like a frustrated girlfriend:
  • N536,295,924– Linking Cables to Driver’s Rest Room at Aso Rock
  • N33,277,595–  Stage Curtains + Electrical Drive at Aso Rock
  • N3,914,197,062– Annual routine maintenance at Aso Rock
  • N1,559,911,748 Electrical work at Aso Rock
  • N259,015,000 Purchase of Tyres, Batteries, Fuses, Toolboxes, Car Jacks, Tyre Changing ‘Machines’, etc. for Aso Rock vehicles.
  • N618,000,000 Purchase of 5 BMW Saloons, 5 BMW SUVs, 16 & 33 Seater Toyota Hiace Buses and pick up vans for Aso Rock.
  • N27,000,000 Purchase of C-Caution Signs, Fire Extinguishers, Towing Ropes and Booster Cables for Aso Rock fleet.
  • N904,015,000 Cost of Acquisition of BRAND NEW automobile fleet and Fleet Maintenance Equipment for Aso Rock.
  • N500,000,000- Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority- 6 Aviation Family Centers-
  • N308,000,000- VIP Wing at State House Medical Center-
  • N400,000,000- Hostel at Nigerian-Benin International School-
  • Ministry of Works, Power & Housing HQ:
    • N400,000,000- Solar Borehole
    • N161,500,000- Motorized Borehole
With all the above in mind, isn’t it clear that the President is a two-sided man? How do we reconcile his words and his actions, seeing that he is condemning people for crimes that he seems to be committing? He is claiming austerity and the budget is befitting of King Solomon!
Then there’s the Halliburton scandal! That scandal runs into about $182 million. Let me try not to talk about that one now.

ECONOMIC SKUS SKWAM
I have a copy of the APC manifesto. It is rich with promises. Promises of how the economy will be revamped under the leadership of Muhammadu Buhari. Very colourful stuff, but what do we have today?
The naira has started having human feelings and is FALLING for the dollar.

This singular factor has caused a ripple effect which has seen the price of household commodities go through the roof in a matter of weeks. Yusuf when last did you go outside to buy anything in Nigeria? I’m sure you don’t do that so often. If you do you will see that things have really CHANGED since your father became President. That’s just one.

At the beginning of the year, your father’s government increased the electricity tariff. As I type this, there is no light here. My laptop’s battery will die in a few minutes and there is no hope of electricity until maybe tomorrow, maybe! But at the end of the month, we receive an electricity bill that is almost as big as the amount we have used in purchasing fuel for our generator in the course of the month.

That’s not all; oil subsidy has been removed by Buhari (I remember when economic activities were grounded because Goodluck Jonathan removed the same subsidy). As a result of the removal 50 kobo was removed from the official pump price of petrol (I said official because petrol actually goes for between N100 and N200 depending on the part of the country you stay) while N33 was added to the price of kerosene.

It is worthy to note that no measures have been put in place to cushion the effect of the numerous policies that are currently causing economic tsunami and drilling boreholes in the bank accounts of poor Nigerians like myself. Should I mention the N50 bank charge or other economic decrees, sorry policies that is working against the sanity of hustling Nigerians? Let me move on to what we were pretending to expect.

THE TECHNICAL PROMISES, THE GIRLS AND TRIBAL JIBI JABA
Like I earlier mentioned, I was given a copy of the APC manifesto. What I did not mention was that it was handed to me by Professor Yemi Osinbajo on December 24, 2014 at the Oriental Hotel, Lekki, where I was one the guests of a campaign event put together by the APC. I have since perused and re-perused the manifesto and these are a few of the promises that were made in that manifesto that have been broken, unfulfilled or “unfulfillable”:
  • Within the first year, employ 740,000 (20,000 + FCT) young graduates in immediate employment and empowerment scheme (UNFULFILLED… This is 9 months and not one Federal Government scheme is visible, no not one)
  • After NYSC, pay graduates stipends for 1 year under a vocational scheme (UNFULFILLABLE)
  • Provide free meals in schools to drastically reduce the number of out of school children (BROKEN, I heard NASCO biscuits were shared sometime back… hahaha)
  • Target up to 20% of our annual budget for education (BROKEN… Hello! Have you seen the 2016 budget?)
  • Create an additional middle class of at least 4 million new home owners by 2019 (UNFULFILLABLE, Unless Fashola wants to pull off some god-like miracle)
  • Ban Medical trips for government officials (BROKEN by Buhari himself! He even opened his mouth to say he has been using one doctor in the UK since 1978)
  • In different phases over 4 years, APC will make monthly direct cash transfer of N5,000 to the 25 million poorest citizens (BROKEN… Buhari recently said this will not be done over the weekend in faraway Saudi Arabia)
  • Generate, transmit and distribute electricity on a 24/7 basis by 2019 (UNFULFILLABLE… Fashola, over to you to prove me wrong)
  • Build up to 6,800 kilometers of modern railway to be completed by 2019 (UNFULFILLABLE… Amaechi, over to you)
Asides the aforementioned, during the campaign period, Buhari spoke tough when it came to Boko Haram and the Chibok girls’ saga. I remember Osinbajo singing praises of how much of a military strategist Buhari is. To make things worse, Buhari gave a deadline for the defeat of Boko Haram – December 2015.

Well we all know that the story has changed. We now have another word to be added to our vocabulary – TECHNICALLY DEFEATED. Backed by the ever-loquacious Lie, sorry Lai Mohammed, we started hearing that word, even when the insurgents were busy killing Nigerians with reckless abandon. What about the Chibok girls?

Should I mention the events of the meeting the President had with Oby Ezekwesili and her Bring Back Our Girls Group which had some of the Chibok parents therein? Buhari was said to be visibly angry at the meeting and even walked out on them at some point! Let me borrow the former First lady, Patience Jonathan’s exclamation … CHAI!

My dear Yusuf, as if that is not enough headache for your father, Nnamdi Kanu and the pro-Biafra agitators started rearing their heads, same with the Niger Delta militants. What did Buhari do? Commando-style suppression of the agitation as usual. Tompolo is a wanted man. Kanu has been in DSS custody since October 2015. Buhari sure knows how to make use of the military and other security agencies, right? Hell no, in my opinion.

Why hasn’t such military approach been used to silence Boko Haram insurgents? Okay that’s asking for too much. You know these Fulani militia, sorry herdsmen? Yusuf, do you know that they have been wreaking havoc indiscriminately in recent times? From the South West where they kidnapped Olu Falae to the South South where they killed a monarch in Delta State to the South East where they waylay road users and make away with their possession. The list is endless. We have not even talked about their activities in the North, not to talk of the North Central, or Middle Belt where they have always been a torn in the flesh of the minority groups residing in that area of Nigeria.

Yusuf, please tell your dad that people on the street are beginning to see him as an ethnic bigot. He himself is not helping matters with the kind of appointments he is making. There are too many examples to be mentioned but I have only two to point out here – Hameed Ali and Lawal Daura.

Col. Ali is NOT a Customs officer but is currently the head of the Nigerian Customs Service. This in my opinion is a severe injustice to the hierarchy of Customs officers who have over the years toiled to get to the top of their field. We should not also forget that Ali was the head of the 3-man military panel that convicted and sentenced Ogoni leader, Ken Saro-Wiwa to death. Please do not forget.

Yusuf, I’m sure you are aware that Daura hails from your hometown, Daura. He is in charge of the DSS. I don’t know how Buhari expects Nigerians to applaud him for employing his kinsman into such a sensitive office. I just don’t know.

ON THE FRINGES: INCONCLUSIVE CHATTER AND OTHER STORIES
Goodluck Jonathan’s INEC organised elections in 36 States for Presidential and national Assembly elections. The same INEC held elections for Governorship and State Assembly elections all within a 2 week period. Almost all elections were concluded on the same day, except special cases like that of Taraba and Imo which had to go into a run-off owing to the close proximity in the number of votes separating the winner and the runner-up.

Buhari becomes President and inherits the same INEC and the same election materials. Two gubernatorial elections were held – Kogi and Bayelsa States – and the results were the same, INCONCLUSIVE (Nigerians should begin to thank this administration for this new lexicons being introduced to us). The case of Kogi is understandable to some extent, but Bayelsa? That State has only eight Local Government Areas. How hard could it possibly be to conduct an election in that state?
Let me be conclusive by mentioning a few more HIGHPOINTS of Buhari’s 9-month stay in government:
  • Ministerial nomination that took months to come to fruition and the lack of surprise it brought to the hearts of Nigerians, considering the fact that the cabinet is made up of people we naturally expected to be there.
  • Buhari insulting the integrity of Nigerians while on foreign trips. What President does that? A president who is supposed to be the number Public Relations Officer of the country is busy calling his countrymen thieves and criminals while on foreign trips? That smirks of naivety! I wonder what the president plans to achieve by bad-mouthing his countrymen in foreign lands.
  • The social media gag bill. Saraki says it’s DEAD ON ARRIVAL. So let me keep quiet on the matter. I also expect Lie, sorry Lai Mohammed to also keep quiet, that man forgets he is no longer the Spokesman of the APC and now a Minister. Yusuf, please tell that man to attend a tutorial on how to be an information minister.
  • Benin military invading Kogi State. Benin Republic o!
There are many more HIGPOINTS to be highlighted, but this is long enough. I’m sure you get the picture. Please tell your father that his 9-month-old government has delivered nothing but media drama and economic hardship for Nigerians. Tell him we need productive economic policies. We need to be able to go to the markets and come back smiling. We need welfare programs for the people. It is shameful that in 9 months, NO SINGLE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SCHEME HAS BEEN INITIATED… NO NOT ONE!

Tell Buhari, we need CHANGE! Not the negative one he is currently giving us! We need positive CHANGE.

Box Office Weekend Round up: Deadpool Threepeats Over Oscar Weekend

This weekend with Hollywood focused on the Academy Awards, super hero giant Deadpool easily remained number one in its third weekend with an estimated $31.5M. Down a reasonable 44%, the Fox smash has upped its cume to a stunning $285.6M which is an incredible figure for a not-so-well-known comic book character. Deadpool now ranks as the third highest-grossing R-rated film of all time afterThe Passion of the Christ and American Sniper. International markets were red hot too with another $40.2M this weekend boosting the offshore total to $324.2M and the worldwide tally to $609.8M.

The historical epic Gods of Egypt became a big-budget flop on opening weekend debuting in second place with an estimated $14M which amounted to just one-tenth of the production cost of the effects-heavy action pic. The PG-13 vehicle released by Lionsgate was panned by film critics and had faced plenty of negativity since the debut of its trailer months ago for both an abundance of white actors playing Egyptians and a cheesy overall look.

With a reported budget of $140M (more than double that of Deadpool), Gods will need a wildly successful international run. 68 overseas markets opened this weekend to the tune of $24.2M with only one market able to get past $2M. Russia led the way with a $3.5M weekend and key territories like Korea, China, France, and Germany are still to come.

Panda power followed as the DreamWorks Animation threequel Kung Fu Panda 3 grossed an estimated $9M dropping 28% in its fifth round. Fox has amassed $128.5M so far in North America and $314.3M worldwide. It has already become the highest grossing animated film of all-time in China with $144.2M there. The biblical drama Risen enjoyed a good second weekend taking in an estimated $7M, down 41%, to boost the cume to $22.7M for Sony.

The weekend’s two other new releases were met with soft results from audiences. Fox’s inspirational pic Eddie the Eagle bowed to an estimated $6.3M from 2,042 sites for a mild $3,085 average. Reviews for the Hugh Jackman flick were positive and word of mouth has been strong (the CinemaScore is a glowing A) so its drops may not be too big in the weeks ahead.

Similar numbers were seen by the cop drama Triple 9 which debuted to an estimated $6.1M from 2,205 locations averaging a weak $2,768 per theater. Reviews were mixed for the R-rated Open Road release with a cast including Casey Affleck, Kate Winslet, Woody Harrelson, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Anthony Mackie.

Collecting an estimated $5.2M was the comedy How To Be Single which fell 37% and has banked $39.6M to date for Warner Bros. A24’s horror film The Witch fell just 43% to an estimated $5M in its sophomore session. With $16.6M to date, the low-cost period chiller could end up with $25-30M. The Jesse Owens film Race followed with an estimated $4.3M, down 42% in its second weekend, putting Focus at $13.9M.

Leading all films with 12 Academy Award nominations, The Revenant remained popular with moviegoers grossing an estimated $3.8M, off a scant 2% in its eighth weekend of wide release, boosting Fox’s cume to a hefty $170.5M. Leonardo DiCaprio is all set to take home the Best Actor Oscar for what is the third highest grossing film of his career after Titanic and Inception. A win for Picture or Director (or both) would help keep the box office run going throughout March. Global tally is $404M and Oscar gold would take it near the $500M mark.

Below the top ten, Oscar contenders for Best Picture had one more weekend to squeeze out some cash from their big nominations. Audiences will lose interest quickly for those that do not win big.
PGA winner The Big Short grossed an estimated $1M this weekend, up 13%, giving Paramount $68.5M to date. Spotlight has cleaned up with critics groups and is still taking in cash with an estimated $788,000, up 51% with screens boosted by 71%. The Open Road pic is now at $39.2M.

Brooklyn dipped just 4% to an estimated $735,000 for $36.5M overall for Fox Searchlight which won the Best Picture trophies over the last two years with 12 Years A Slave and Birdman. Likely Best Actress winner Brie Larson’s Room expanded and watched its weekend take climb 58% to an estimated $643,000. A24’s cume is $13.5M which is more than double what it had when Oscar nominations were announced.

The top ten films grossed an estimated $92.1M which was up 3% from last year when Focus opened at number one with $18.7M; but down 12% from 2014 when Non-Stop debuted in the top spot with $28.9M.

Compared to projections, Gods of Egypt came in a little higher than my $12M prediction. Triple 9 and Eddie the Eagle opened a little below my forecasts of $9M and $8M.

Hilarious!!!: Top 10 Common Lies Lagos Girls Tell Guys.

Lagos girls are fun to be with, but dating in Lagos goes beyond just love as guys understand the culture of dating in Lagos, but these revealed top 10 lies their girls tell them, will help them up their game.
1. I have a boyfriend but he is not in this country:
This is a common lie Lagos ladies like to tell always. While that may be true, it is mostly going to be a lie if you truly check. Lagos ladies tell the lies to make you back off or for you to know they are connected with a guy abroad in which case it has become a status symbol

2. The lecturer called me but I didn’t go to see him:
Well, that is an absolute lie. Lecturers are demi-gods in our universities. When they send for female students, it is always for a reason. She probably wants you to believe she has not had any dealings with a lecturer.

3. I am not bleaching my skin, we are naturally light in my family:
While this may be true, many girls in Lagos are bleaching their skin.

4. I am on my period:
If a girl visits a guy and its time to get down, be sure the girl will come at the guy with the red flag excuse.

5. I went to visit a guy and he gave me 100k:
Lagos girls like to prize themselves for the highest bidder. When a girl tells you this, it means you have to buckle up and be prepared to spend the naira.

6. I don’t love guys because of their money:
Don’t be deceived. She is playing the good girl to enter your heart. Once she has your attention, she will come for the kill.

7. He is just a friend:
Well, the other guy is not her enemy either. But remember male friends can do what a normal guy can do a girl.

8. I love you too:
Well, love is relative. She may love you for anything.

9. I will call you:
No she won’t, she will flash you.

10. I don’t eat much:
Lagos girls like food. Don’t be deceived

DNA Tests Prove Retired Postman Has Over 1,300 Illegimitate Children

An 87-year-old former postman has been proven to have fathered over 1,300 illegitimate children after a private investigator hired by a Tennessee family discovered the shocking truth. The investigation that has gathered thousands of DNA samples and testimonies over a 15-year period ultimately proves the man is the father to literally thousands of illegitimate children in the region.

“Contraception wasn’t very popular in those days,” he told local reporters in his defense. “I have nothing to be ashamed of. The 60s were the good old days and I did a great Johnny Cash impression which played out real good with the ladies,” he explained. “Some even thought I was Johnny Cash for real,” he recalls laughingly. “I don’t know if they really believed it or if they were trying to convince themselves, but who was I to say no to a quickie?” he acknowledged.

According to Scoop, private investigator Sid Roy never could have imagined a simple gig would end up in a 15-year quest for the truth. “It all started in 2001 when two different men that had nothing to do with each other hired me to find their biological father.

I was astounded after further investigation to realize they both originated from the same person. That is when the mystery started unraveling and it became a personal mission of mine, whenever I had some free time, I’d try and track down other testimonies. Eventually, DNA testing became really cheap and easy to use and helped me gather a lot of information in the latest years,” he acknowledges.

The private investigator says the children of the old man don’t intend to pursue any lawsuit against the old man. “Most people who are aware of the truth don’t want this information to get out and have given anonymous testimonies,” he explains. “The truth unleashed could break up hundreds or more families and that’s definitely not the point of all these years of research. All I know is that most people are glad to know the truth and don’t bear any grudge against the old man, I guess it was a more common practice in those days,” he acknowledges.

Whatsapp Will Be Discontinued on Blackberry and Nokia Operating System this Year

Popular chat application on smartphones, Whatsapp is set for discontinuation this year following a pronouncement by the company.
Earlier this week Whatsapp celebrated its 7th year anniversary with its 1 Billion Active users, instead to break a bad news on such a good day, the team decided to wait till on Friday when they announced that the app will soon be discontinued on BlackBerry and Nokia devices running those company's operating systems.

Yes! that include the Blackberry 10 device. Though the new Android-powered Blackberry Priv slider phone might probably survive this heat because it was built with Android OS.

According to the announcement made by Whatsapp:

As we look ahead to our next seven years, we want to focus our efforts on the mobile platforms the vast majority of people use. So, by the end of 2016, we will be ending support for WhatsApp Messenger on the following mobile platforms:

1. BlackBerry, including BlackBerry 10

2. Nokia S40

3. Nokia Symbian S60

4. Android 2.1 and Android 2.2

5. Windows Phone 7.1

While these mobile devices have been an important part of our story, they don't offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app's features in the future.

The Nokia S40 discontinuation will deeply affect developing countries like Nigeria because most people still use old Nokia phone. The likes of Nokia asha 200 and 203, Nokia 6100, 6200, Nokia c2 and c3 just to mention a few.

I know most of us still love our old nokia phones. WhatsApp suggests "upgrading to a newer Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone" if you want to keep on using the service — if not, you'll need to find another messaging service by the end of the year before the service get discontinued.

Saraki, Dogara Reject N10 Billion Official Quarters

The leadership of the National Assembly have called for a reduction in the budgeted amount for the construction of official residences for the leaders of the both legislative chambers.
It was learnt, at the weekend, that Senate President Bukola Saraki and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt.. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, have rejected the N10billion voted in the 2016 budget of the Ministry of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for the building of their official quarters, opting for a cut in the vote, according to the Vanguard.

Saraki and Dogara, according to National Assembly sources, last week, agreed that the cost of the buildings should be reduced to one billion Naira each, to save the country N8billion.

They were said to have informed the chairmen of the Committees on FCT in both chambers to reflect the decision in their report to the Committees on Appropriation.

The Senate President and Speaker said in view of the economic situation in the country and the need for public officials to be frugal, building houses worth N6bn and N4bn respectively for them was insensitive.

The two top legislators said the FCT ministry should scale down the cost of the projects or forget the idea until after their tenure. The Senate President was living in his personal house in Maitama area of Abuja until a fire incident last year forced him to relocate to an official guest house while Dogara stays in a rented apartment.

Television News Casters Present News Bulletins Live on TV Without Wearing a Bra (Photos)

Some Albanian men will now be more interested in watching the news as Fire TV, a television station recently ordered its female news casters to start broadcasting news without wearing a bra.
24-year old Albanian news reader, Greta Hoxha, is making some headlines online and the social media is also buzzing after she presented her news bulletin bra-less with only a nude coloured blazer protecting her modesty.

Hoxha who is a presenter for TV station Fire TV, caused a media storm when she took the decision to have near topless women host its news output after the TV station ordered its female news casters to start broadcasting news without wearing a bra.

It can be recalled that she made the news herself back in November, when she chose to celebrate Liberation Day - which commemorates Albania's liberation from the Nazis in 1944 by wearing nothing but a skimpy waistcoat decorated in the national colours.

16-Year-Old Russian Gamer Wins A Month Of Living With An Adult Film Star In A Hotel

Ruslan Shchedrin, a teenage gamer from Russia, has won a bizarre prize for being the 100,000th visitor to a website that sells in-game weapons and gear. He is being rewarded with a month-long stay at a Moscow hotel in the company of an X-rated film star! The unusual contest was held in celebration of Defender of the Fatherland Day, a Russian holiday held every year, on February 23rd. Young Ruslan turned out to be the 100,000th person to visit the website that day, hitting the jackpot. “At first I did not believe it, but when I realized that this is true, I thanked the site,” he said. “I am overjoyed and my friends are also happy for me, although there is some envy.”

His family, however, is furious. They believe he’s already wasted too much time on the video games and this prize will now be another colossal waste of his time. “I am totally against it,” said his mother, Vera Shchedrin. “He has exams, what do you mean a month with a P0*n star? Even a week is too much! They should just give him 100,000 rubles instead, we would be happy with that.”

The boy’s sister, 17-year-old Diana Schedrina agrees that the prize is inappropriate. “I’m against it too. I don’t think it is any kind of chance for him. He can find a girlfriend if he likes,” she said. “I wonder what would have happened if a married man had won? Or even a young girl, I know some of them enjoy playing these games too.

It is totally the wrong idea for a prize.”
Organizers took that into consideration when they came up with the idea, though, and the rules clearly state that the winner can pass on their prize to an ‘official representatives’. In Ruslan’s case that could be his father, although his mother won’t hear of it. “No, absolutely not,” Vera said, adding that the controversial prize has already led to family quarrels and made her son mad.

'Game of Thrones' New season Premiere, Hang with the Cast ... If You Got $10,000

Attention rich nerds: watch the premiere of "Game of Thrones" weeks before it airs while breathing the same air as Cersei and Margaery ... all for the bargain price of several THOUSAND dollars.Luxury concierge sites are cashing in on the 'GoT' hype and hawking tickets to the season premiere and after-party at the famous TCL Chinese Theatre -- and they're charging up to $10k for a pair.

Surprisingly, there's not much bang for those bucks. We're told there's no guaranteed photo ops, autographs or even a good seat at the April 10th event. One slightly cheaper option -- CharityBuzz is auctioning off tix and current bids are right around $6k.

We're told 'GoT' die-hards always fork out the cash for this stuff since most would push their child out a tower window for a chance to schmooze with the cast.

Tickets to premiere -- $10k

Spoiling premiere for your friends -- Priceless.

Meet One of Africa's Billionaires, Abdul Samad Rabiu, The Unassuming Business Tycoon Extraordinaire

Abdul Samad Rabiu, Africa's billionaires and business tycoon who is taking the world by storm and listed as one of Africa's youngest billionaires.
It was on a frosty autumn night in London when an expensive car drove into the courtyard of a wealthy home. Shortly, on the entrance steps, the doors swung open and coming out was one of Africa’s richest men on a T-shirt, jeans and black overcoat. Hardly could one imagine that the man is the chairman and CEO of BUA Group, a privately-owned conglomerate with interests in manufacturing, infrastructure and agriculture and annual revenues estimated at $2 billion.

The look may be modest but his ambitions are to invest more than $500 million in Nigeria’s economy over the next few years. This is Abdulsamad Rabiu, the unassuming Nigerian business tycoon, full of life, with a keen ear and a great business story.

Rabiu’s stake in his commodities and cement empire, plus his real estate holdings in South Africa and London, are worth $1.2 billion, primarily due to better information on Rabiu’s holdings and the revenue of his companies. In 2013, he ranked 23rd on Forbes list of Africa’s 50 Richest.

Interestingly, he was born to a well-known businessman, Khalifah Isyaku Rabiu, who made a fortune in trade and industry in the decades after Nigeria’s independence from the United Kingdom in 1960. By the 1970s, Isyaku emerged as a key sponsor of the National Party of Nigeria, which became the ruling political party after the country returned to civil rule following the elections of 1979.

In 1984, the Head of State at the time, General Muhammadu Buhari, who had taken over the government in a military coup, arrested Isyaku and jailed him along with other commodity traders on charges of rice hoarding.

During this period, the younger Rabiu earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. Barely 24 years old then, Abdul Samad returned to Nigeria to lead his father’s business empire during the dark days. As a young executive director at the company, he was able to steer the family business out of trouble created by the absence of their father.

When he had successfully navigated his father’s business through stormy waters, he established a trading and manufacturing company called it BUA International Limited in 1988 for the sole purpose of commodity trading and importation of rice, edible oil, flour, iron and steel.

In 1990, the then government-owned Delta Steel Company contracted BUA to supply its raw material needs, for which BUA company was paid with finished products. This provided the much needed windfall for the young company. The company further ventured into steel, billets and iron ore importation and supplying multiple rolling mills in Nigeria.

Few years down the line, BUA acquired Nigerian Oil Mills Limited, the largest edible oil processing company in Nigeria and later set up two flour milling plants in Lagos and Kano in 2005. By 2008, it broke an eight-year monopoly in the Nigerian sugar industry by commissioning the second largest sugar refinery in sub-saharan Africa. The company went on the acquire a controlling stake in a publicly listed Cement Company of Northern Nigeria in 2009 and commenced the construction of a $500 million cement plant in Edo State.

Abdul Samad Rabiu loves giving back and sometimes uses BUA Foundation for his philanthropic activities. These include the construction of a 7,000 Square metre paediatric ward at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital as well as the construction of the Centre for Islamic Studies at the Bayero University, Kano, among several others.

Besides his assets in the BUA Group, Rabiu owns property in Britain worth $62 million and in South Africa, worth $19 million. Among his properties is a house in Gloucester Square in London worth nearly $16 million and a penthouse at The One & Only Hotel, in Cape Town, worth $12.6 million. Rabiu’s taste for good living is plain to see; he has bought homes from Eaton Square to Avenue Road, also known as Millionaires’ Row.

Rabiu jets around the world on an 8-seater Gulfstream G550 worth $44.9 million, powered by a Rolls-Royce BR710 turbofan engine, as well as an $18-million Legacy 600 aircraft.

Rabiu’s achievements in the industry have not gone unrecognised, even by the government. In 2010, he was appointed as chairman of Nigeria’s Bank of Industries (BoI), a bank that provides finance to local and foreign entrepreneurs looking to establish new industries in the country.
